First there was the intoxication for American writers. I read everything, without an order or a policy. All I could recover, primarily through word of mouth: from Steinbeck to Dos Passos, from Faulkner to Saroyan, and of course Hemingway. I came to know as an unexplored continent in which I introduced the various Vittorini, Pavese, Pivano etc.. It was a delightful time that, on the fifteen-sixteen. I must confess, however, take time also to a general "good" to see the yellow and the police ... and not always it was Chandler!
Some time later, around eighteen, I was seized with a sudden passion for the 'existentialism or should I say the better for the environment of Saint-Germain-des-Prés and the people who animated the cultural and intellectual life of Paris and inspired by Sartre, Prévert, de Beauvoir, and so on. How could anyone resist the charm of the "caves" of Greek Juliette, Miles Davis, Boris Vian? Even in later years have exercised considerable power over me the literary cafes of the Left Bank of Paris, the bistros, the boulevards at the time of the existentialists.
Returning to bomb, my favorite was Albert Camus : its "Aliens" and "The Plague," judged them superior to "Nausea" by JPSartre. Beyond the literary value of works and with all the limitations of my youth, I liked the sincerity of Camus (he had only called rich in doubt, accustomed to the loneliness of the job and the comfort of friendships), its modest origins, contradictions, took a stand against Stalinism and war and not least the fact that a little 'all gave him, from right and left. On the other hand, as I understood just by reading The Plague, Camus was perhaps the only one to see in love and solidarity among men a way to overcome the anguish of living, the desperation of existence, while the true atheistic existentialism was hopeless.
JP Sartre seemed too cerebral, too intellectual. " But each of us kids had his preferences: for example, for one thing, I remember my dear companion Gigi made a half to Merleau-Ponty's disease, so that during our walks in the arcades, before dinner, we entertained kindly on the primacy of perception and the relationship between structure and meaning ... Well, anyway, yesterday I have returned to the memory of that time period before its maturity because of the anniversary of the death of Albert Camus: it is Écrivain 50 years that the pied-noir is gone because of an automobile accident, January 4, 1960. Flipping through magazines on-line here and there is clear (as well as headline LaStampa.it yesterday) that, after half a century after his death, Albert Camus continues to divide, not just France, a sign that he was a man and a writer "real", authentic, not a trend!
As I read in some blogs have already covered the topic Camus, I just mention just a few sentences of the official discourse that he delivered in Stockholm at the Nobel Prize in 1957. On that occasion he said, speaking of the role of the writer "if the ne peut aujourd'hui au service de ceux bien visible here font l'histoire: it is with those who suffer. "
E più avanti" ... the writer can find the feeling of a living community that warrants, provided only that it accepts, as he can, the two charges that are the size of its business: the service of truth and the of freedom. "A proposito di
